Even today, more than fifty years after construction, Stalin's skyscrapers are of paramount importance in the urban environment and are one of Moscow's characteristic sights.

The authors of the projects of Moscow high-rise buildings managed to create original architectural solutions, which received the name "Stalin's Empire style" in the special literature, symbolising the greatness of the Land of Soviets. The buildings were supposed to be a kind of architectural parity of the superpowers, superstructures - the answer to American skyscrapers. The construction of all skyscrapers lasted a total of ten years.

Based on the scale of perception from different city points, a lighting concept was developed to combine all the unique buildings into a single light ensemble. Considering the stepped architecture, the lighting was divided into three levels of brightness: the minimum at the bottom - in the pedestrian area, the maximum at the top - in the area of the lantern and spire, while it was essential to maintain a solid light image of the building, with delicate dynamics directed to the sky.

When creating lighting solutions, at the first stage, the volume of the building and the distribution of brightness across the facades were shown. The second stage emphasises all the architectural details, and the third stage is the choice of colour, which is based on the colour palette of the high-rise finishing materials.

A single colour and light concept for all buildings in the basic everyday scenario provides lighting in the colour temperature range between 2700-4200 K. In addition to the everyday lighting mode, the concept also includes a weekend mode, a holiday mode, and a dynamic colour scenario for different times of the day. So, in the night mode, the main lighting is gradually turned off, leaving only the spires of buildings, the colour of which turns into a deep blue, imitating the colour of nightlights. "Moscow is sleeping" - skyscrapers tell us. By morning, the colour of the spires gradually changes from blue to orange-yellow - meeting the dawn.

The new concept of architectural lighting was developed with the aim of harmonising and hierarchising the seven Stalinist skyscrapers at all levels of perception. Designed to take into account the diversity of illuminated objects in the urban landscape and the fact that there is a constant change here, the Stalinist skyscrapers in the new lighting will form poles of calm in the vibrant image of the city sparkling with all colours, but also sublimely preserve their worldwide unique feature.

Lit spires are telling as: "Moscow is asleep".

With the sunrise spires are painted dawn colours and wake up with the capital’s citizens.
