Tatev Monastery, founded at the end of the 9th century, has been Armenia's major spiritual centre and centre of science and education for centuries and is considered for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Tatev monastery complex is a masterpiece of the fusion of ingenious medieval architecture with the fabulous nature of Armenia. Tatev Monastery is located in the southern part of Armenia on the edge of a giant gorge. The walls of the Tatev Monastery seem to be a natural continuation of the rock that raised it so high. The work is carried out in close cooperation with Ruben Vardanyan under the auspices of the Tatev Revival project, the reconstruction of the monastery complex, its preservation and further maintenance following world standards. Unfortunately, due to the events of 2020-2022, work on the project has been temporarily suspended.

The survey result showed that in the evening, the monastery is observed against the background of completely dark mountains. There is no background illumination in these places. This circumstance dictates a very delicate approach to the choice of power and luminous flux of lighting equipment. All lamps illuminating the temple make it possible to change the colour temperature when it is possible to develop any lighting scenarios, taking into account the sunrise and sunset. Also, by changing the colour temperature of the lamps and adjusting their brightness, you can best choose the shade of glow that is ideal for the texture and colour of the thousand-year-old walls of the monastery.

Low-power lamps are installed in the narrow high windows-loopholes of the temple, illuminating the window openings from the inside. They imitate the warm light of candles pouring from within.

Lighting devices should not create discomfort for tourists and residents. It is also necessary to preserve the historical image that has long been established on the territory of the monastery. Therefore absolutely all lighting devices are installed secretly or recessed into the ground.
